UniFi and Aruba are the two enterprise WiFi platforms most frequently evaluated by Thai businesses. This comparison covers hardware performance, management approach, controller costs, RF optimization, and which deployment scenarios each platform handles best.

The enterprise WiFi decision in 2026

Enterprise WiFi has changed significantly over the past few years. WiFi 6 (802.11ax) is now the baseline expectation for new deployments, and WiFi 6E and WiFi 7 hardware is entering the market. Concurrent device density, seamless roaming, and cloud-managed visibility have moved from differentiators to standard requirements.

Two platforms dominate the conversations SIPPER has with Thai enterprise and mid-market customers: Ubiquiti's UniFi and HPE Aruba Networking. Both produce capable hardware, but their approaches to management, support, and total cost differ significantly. UniFi: unified management at a competitive price point

UniFi is Ubiquiti's enterprise networking brand, covering access points, switches, routers, and cameras under a single management platform. The UniFi Controller (now UniFi Network Application) runs on-premises on dedicated UniFi Dream Machine hardware or on a self-hosted server, and is also available as a hosted service through UniFi Site Manager. The management software is free — there is no per-device or per-site subscription for the controller itself.

The UniFi U6-Pro is the flagship WiFi 6 access point for most indoor enterprise deployments. It delivers up to 5.3 Gbps aggregate throughput across 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands, supports MU-MIMO and OFDMA, and includes a 2.5GbE uplink port. The U6-LR (Long Range) variant uses a directional antenna for coverage in corridors or large open spaces. The newer U7-Pro (WiFi 7 / 802.11be) pushes the envelope further with a 6GHz band, 4x4 MU-MIMO on 5GHz, and theoretical aggregate throughput above 9 Gbps. It is positioned for high-density environments where WiFi 7 client adoption is expected to grow over the coming years.

UniFi's RF management tools are practical but less sophisticated than dedicated RF planning tools. Automatic channel selection and transmit power adjustment work adequately for most deployments, but very large or RF-complex environments may require more manual tuning. The UniFi platform does not natively integrate with third-party RF planning software.

Captive portal functionality is included in UniFi. Hotspot Portal lets administrators create branded guest networks with voucher codes, time limits, or payment integration, without additional licensing cost.

Aruba: enterprise-grade RF and cloud management

HPE Aruba Networking (previously Aruba Networks, now part of HPE) is a platform built specifically for demanding enterprise wireless deployments. The Aruba Instant On line serves SMB, while the Aruba 500 and 600 series access points target enterprise and campus environments.

The Aruba AP22 is the baseline WiFi 6 dual-band access point, available in Thailand at approximately ฿6,180 and above depending on the distributor and bundle configuration. It is a 2x2 MU-MIMO device suitable for medium-density deployments. The AP25 steps up to 4x4 MU-MIMO and adds a dedicated 2.4GHz management radio, making it better suited for high-density environments like conference rooms, classrooms, and open-plan offices with many concurrent devices.

Aruba's real differentiation is its RF intelligence. Aruba's Adaptive Radio Management (ARM) dynamically assigns channels and power levels based on real-time RF environment scanning, including neighbor APs outside your network. ClientMatch steers clients to the optimal AP and band based on device capability and network conditions — reducing the sticky-client problem that plagues many enterprise deployments.

Aruba Central is the cloud management platform for Aruba access points. Unlike UniFi's free controller, Aruba Central requires a subscription — typically licensed per device per year. Pricing varies by tier (Foundation, Advanced, Premium) and contract length. For large deployments, Aruba Central's subscription adds meaningfully to the annual operating cost compared to UniFi.

However, Aruba Central provides capabilities that UniFi's free controller does not match: AI-driven network insights, predictive anomaly detection, detailed per-client RF health reporting, and deep integration with Aruba ClearPass for 802.1X and network access control.

WiFi 6 and performance comparison

At the hardware level, both platforms support WiFi 6 with OFDMA and MU-MIMO. The practical throughput difference between an Aruba AP22 and a UniFi U6-Pro in a typical office deployment is not significant for most use cases — both deliver more than sufficient bandwidth for productivity applications and video conferencing.

The measurable difference appears in high-density scenarios. Aruba's ARM and ClientMatch actively manage the RF environment in ways that the UniFi controller does not, which can meaningfully improve per-client throughput and roaming consistency in environments with 50 or more concurrent clients per AP.

For typical office deployments with one AP per room or one AP per 20-30 users, UniFi U6-Pro performs comparably to Aruba AP22 at a lower per-unit cost.

When to choose UniFi

UniFi is the better choice when management cost matters as much as hardware cost. For organizations deploying up to 30-50 access points across one or a few locations, the free controller, competitive hardware pricing, and unified management across APs, switches, and routing equipment provide strong total value.

UniFi is also well-suited for organizations with internal IT staff who can manage the platform, hospitality environments that need customizable captive portals without recurring software costs, and multi-site SMB deployments where centralized management through UniFi Site Manager is sufficient.

When to choose Aruba

Aruba is the better choice for high-density environments — conference centers, retail floors, hospitals, university classrooms, warehouses — where per-client performance and seamless roaming are critical. Aruba's RF management capabilities meaningfully outperform UniFi in these scenarios.
